Interstate Economic Relations: What Can History Tell Us About Where We’re Going

International economic relations have been experiencing tremendous upheaval over the last several years and the events of 2026 have underlined how far we have come since believing that economic multilateralism would eliminate armed conflict and ensure global prosperity and that everyone agreed with the benefits of a global economic field.
At the same time, international economic relations have often been tenuous – with political and social influences changing how states think about the advantages and disadvantages of cooperating on a global scale. History is full of evolving and shifting philosophies on whether and how states should interact.
This fall, the SICL is taking the opportunity to look at interstate relations over the last centuries to try to map out where our ideas about legally mandated multilateralism came from and where we might be heading in the next decades. Our speakers come from a variety of backgrounds and will be discussing their thoughts with us and the audience in an open and inquisitive online exchange.
